Employment in the country rose in the first quarter and inflation has eased, but higher interest rates will keeping weighing on spending and investment, said Franziska Palmas, senior economist for Capital Economics.
Paul Dales, chief economist with consultancy Capital Economics, said the fine details of the data showed GDP did decline by a marginal 0.02 per cent in the third quarter even if the figure was rounded to show no change.
Ruth Gregory of Capital Economics says there are several reasons why the economy “has been resilient to the twin drags of high interest rates”.
The export contraction was the biggest since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, according to Capital Economics.
“This is noteworthy because, in addition to its size, Country Garden was previously viewed as being in relatively good shape compared to most other private developers,” said Julian Evans-Pritchard, head of China economics at Capital Economics.
“We still think that a slowdown in inflation will convince the bank to keep its short-term policy rate unchanged over the coming months,” Capital Economics said in a research note.
